The National Scholastic Chess Foundation’s Grand Prix Chess series comes to Greenwich Country Day School with a tournament on Sunday, Nov. 20. Events are open to all students (K-12).
This year’s tournament series began last week with a tournament at Greenwich Academy where the host school’s 24 girls took first place team trophies in the Future Masters, Primary and Primary Novice sections and second place in the K-1 section.
They were followed closely by the 22 boys from Brunswick school, 11 of whom were playing in their first tournament ever, who took team firsts in the Championship and K-1 sections, a second in primary novice and third place in primary.
Top individual prize winners included Serena Evans who had a perfect 4.0 score in the Primary section and Alexanda Zummo who scored 4.0 in Primary Novice. Both are students at Greenwich Academy. Colin Dean from Brunswick School scored 4.0 in the K-1 section.
Competition at GCDS promises to be even stronger as some of last year’s champions tournament. Award Winners from the 2015-16 Grand Prix season will be recognized in a brief presentation at 12:30 p.m.
“Anyone can have a great event and take home a tournament trophy. The Grand Prix Awards recognize the persistence and determination of our chess players over an extended period of time,” said NSCF Sunil Weeramantry. “By presenting these awards during a tournament we hope to inspire new players to see that in chess, as in life, there’s not always an immediate reward. You have to work hard, and often for some length of time, before you realize your goals.”
Registration for the tournament is $40 in advance or $50 on the day of the event. Group rates are also available with a $5 savings per child. Parents can register their child online by visiting nscfchess.events4chess.com. Greenwich Country Day School is located at 401 Old Church Rd.
