The Greenwich High School athletic department will be busy next week, as play in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournaments kick off shortly for several programs.

Fresh off its FCIAC co-championship in boys’ soccer, the Kurt Putnam’s squad will partake in the class LL tournament. Big Red, with a regular season record of 13-0-3, will be the second seed in the tournament and will be in action Tuesday afternoon at home. They will play the winner of the Career/Hillhouse versus Westhill High School game starting at 2 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.

If the Cardinals win their opener, they will battle either No. 15 seed Southington High School or No. 18 seed Newtown Thursday at home.

Overall, it’s Naugatuck that’s the top seed in class LL, posting a regular season record of 13-0-3. When it comes to FCIAC teams in the class LL tourney, there are plenty. Right below Greenwich is Trumbull (12-0-4) as the No. 3 seed. Danbury (10-2-4) is the No. 11 seed, while Darien (10-4-2) is seeded 13th. Fairfield Warde (10-4-2) is seeded 14th, Staples (7-3-6) is 21st, Fairfield Ludlowe (9-6-1) is seeded 22nd, Stamford (8-5-3) is ranked 24th, Ridgefield (6-5-5) is 30th, Westhill (7-9-0) is 34th and Norwalk (5-7-4) is 35th.

Although the Greenwich High School volleyball team fell in the FCIAC semifinals, they are still tops in the class LL tournament. With a record of 17-1, Big Red earned the No. 1 spot in class LL and has an opening round bye. On Thursday, the Cardinals will be back in action when they play the winner of No. 16 Hall versus No. 17 Fairfield Warde High School at the GHS gymnasium at 6 p.m.

In the 24-team class LL field, there will be some very familiar faces. Stamford ( 18-2) is the third seed, while right behind them is Ridgefield High School at 17-2. The fifth seed is Brien McMahon, as they took home a regular season record of 16-3. Not far away is Trumbull, as the Eagles (14-5) took home the 11th seed. Fairfield Warde, Danbury and Staples also took top 20 spots, as the Mustangs (12-8) are ranked 17th, the Hatters (11-8) are No. 18 and the Wreckers (11-9) are seeded 19th.

Darien (9-9) is No. 22 seeded and Wilton (9-11) rounds out the FCIAC opponents as the the No. 24 seed.

When it comes to field hockey, Greenwich High School will see quite the familiar opponent in the opening round. The Lady Cardinals enter the class L tournament as the No. 10 seed with a 9-5-0-1 and will travel to Sam Testa Field and battle No. 7 seed Norwalk High School (12-2-0-1) Wednesday at 6 p.m. The winner of the Bears and Cardinals will compete against the winner of the No. 2 seed Enfield versus either Newtown or Conard.

In addition to Greenwich and Norwalk, the FCIAC has seven teams competing in class L. Leading the way is Staples and Darien, as the Wreckers (13-0-2-0) are the third seed and the Blue Wave are No. 4 with a record of 13-1-2-0. Not far behind is Wilton, as they have a 12-1-2-1 regular season record that’s good enough for seventh. Fairfield Ludlowe (10-6-0-0) is right behind Greenwich as a No. 11 seed, while Trumbull is at No. 17 with a 8-7-0-1 regular season mark. Ridgefield (8-8-0-0) is 19th overall in class L, while Fairfield Warde is seeded 21st with a record of 6-6-1-1.

Today also continues the Greenwich High School boys’ and girls’ cross-country team’s postseason, as the Cardinals are up at Wickham Park competing in the state open championship.

Coming up shortly, the Greenwich High School girls swimming and diving teams will be in action competing at the state level. On Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m., the divers will take to the pool at Middletown High school for competition in the class LL championships. Six days later, the swimmers will have their chance to leave a mark on class LL, as the finals take place Nov. 16 at the Southern Connecticut State University pool at 6 p.m.

For Opens, the GHS divers will head to Bulkeley High School on Nov. 18, while the swim team heads East to Yale University on Nov. 19 for competition in the CIAC state open championships.
