Audubon Greenwich Unveils Accessible Nature Trail and Pond

Audubon Greenwich will be hosting a Grand Opening of its Accessible Nature Trail and a restored teaching pond, on Saturday, Oct. 22.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 1 to 1:30 p.m., with First Selectman Peter Tesei, Tommy Hilfiger on behalf of Autism Speaks, Dr. Spike Lipschutz, Chief Medical Officer of Greenwich Hospital, Kevin Kimberlin of Spencer Trask &Co., and Hank and Andy Ashforth of the Ashforth Company in attendance.

The ceremony with live birds of prey will be followed by guided hikes/strolls, pond exploration activities, and creative outdoor play along the new Nature Play Trail from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The one mile-long Accessible Nature Trail provides access to Audubon’s sanctuary for all visitors – including those with limited mobility, small children or strollers – and allows them to experience nature with friends and family. The trail does not exceed a 5% slope as it meanders down from the Kimberlin Nature Center through the Nature Play area, around the newly re-opened teaching pond and through a variety of habitats including meadows, shrubland, forest and historic apple orchard.

Formerly called Indian Spring Pond, the newly-restored teaching pond features new, accessible boardwalks and platforms and will be renamed “Georgie’s Pond” for the late Georgie Ashforth, one of Audubon’s most gifted and passionate volunteer Teacher Naturalists.

The event is free. RSVP to greenwichcenter@audubon.org. Audubon Greenwich is located at 613 Riversville Rd.
