The Garden Education Center announces its new catalog of upcoming lectures, workshops and events for the fall. The fall kicks off with the 9th Annual Dahlia Show and Greenhouse Open House, both of which are open to the public on Oct. 1 and 2. Admission is free.

Upcoming horticulture classes range from instructions on putting your garden to bed and planting paperwhites and amaryllis to Plant Doctor Mondays in the greenhouse with Horticulture Director, Lisa Beebe. A trip to Stonecrop Gardens and Boscobel House and Gardens will be held during peak foliage season. Stonecrop is a “plant enthusiast’s garden” consisting of 15 acres in the Hudson Highlands. Boscobel is located on 68 acres on the east bank of the Hudson River looking towards West Point.

If it is floral design you are interested in, then plan to attend hands-on centerpiece workshops prior to Thanksgiving and the December holidays. Join Hunter Smith from Citarella to create a floral centerpiece using seasonal fall flowers and foliage. Trish O’Sullivan, Director of Floral Design for NYBG, will offer guidance in creating an all white Holiday Centerpiece.

For those that want to brush up on their artistic skills, award-winning photographer, Anne Friday, will be sharing tips to make the most of your smart phone camera. If you are seeking a Girls Night Out, then coordinate with friends for a Monday night in November spent creating a decoupage tray using garden book botanical prints.

If you are in the market for “spook-tacular” fun for the whole family, then the Garden Ghouls & Haunted Trails event is for you. Children will venture down the haunted trail of thrills and chills with a guide where along the way they will meet up with ghoulish tale tellers and gather around to hear stories. For those less brave, refreshments and the opportunity to create a long lasting adorned pumpkin will be available in the greenhouse.

Lastly, the GEC will offer a lecture by Andrea Wulf, author of new book The Invention of Nature, Alexander von Humboldt’s New World. In it she reveals the extraordinary life of the visionary German naturalist, explorer and scientist, Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) and how he created the way we understand nature today.
