Former United States Chief of Protocol for President George H.W. Bush and Greenwich resident Joseph Verner Reed Jr. passed away Thursday.

The 78-year-old was also a former Ambassador to Morocco.

“Barbara and I were deeply saddened to learn that our elegant and affable friend, Jospeh Reed, has passed,” President George H.W. Bush said in a prepared statement. “A lifelong advocate for international cooperation, he was by my side during some of the most critical moments of my presidency, the quiet mastermind who literally help set the stage for the diplomatic progress we made during a historic period of global change. We are biased, of course, but Joseph was the ideal Chief of Protocol — perhaps the finest in modern history. The entire Bush family sends our love and condolences to his wonderful daughters, Serena and Electra.”

Reed is survived by Electra Reed, who is from Greenwich, and Serena Reed of California.
