The Greenwich Public Schools (GPS) 2016-2017 Dare 2 Care Social Emotional Learning (SEL) initiative includes school-based events related to GPS Norms, expanding partnerships throughout the community and a focus on promoting mindfulness in the schools and in the community.

Mindfulness is “paying attention to your life, here and now, with kindness and curiosity” (Amy Salzman).

By introducing mindfulness as a practice, GPS aim to foster students’ ability to thrive by learning how to cope with stress, strengthen self-awareness, and build resilience and self-regulation. The growing body of research on mindfulness in school-based contexts reveals the following list of core benefits:

  • Increased Empathy and Understanding of Others
  • Better Focus and Concentration
  • Increased Sense of Calm
  • Decreased Stress and Anxiety
  • Improved Impulse Control
  • Increased Self Awareness
  • Skillful Responses to Difficult Emotions
  • Development of Effective Conflict Resolution Skills

Dare 2 Care 2016-2017 Project Goals

The project objectives are aligned with the GPS Vision of the Graduate, emphasizing the development of students’ social-emotional skills in order to contribute to community through service and leadership, and to develop resilience and responsibility. Specifically:

1- Expand current SEL and mindfulness programming in all schools in GPS in order to (1) ensure a nurturing and safe school climate, (2) enhance children’s ability to cope with stress and thrive, and (3) increase their ability to self-regulate, which in turn will lead to increased availability for learning and better academic performance.

2- Organize parent and student mindfulness opportunities that aim to (1) foster emotional resilience, compassion and self-care, and (2) teach basic and simple tools to insure emotional well-being and prevent mental health problems (e.g., stress, anxiety, depression).
