Dr. Christina Agapakis, Creative Director at Gingko Bioworks, will discuss “Synthetic Biology: Designing Living Things” at the Bruce Museum on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. with a reception and light refreshments, followed by the lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Called “one of the most exciting young scientists in the field,” Agapakis will give an introduction to the science and the art of synthetic biology, in particular its applications in food, fermentation, and fragrance.
“Biology is the best manufacturing platform on the planet, a self-assembling and self-renewing method for building incredible molecules and materials,” she notes. “As we better learn to design with biology, our technologies may become more biological, offering creative opportunities to rethink how we make everything.”
The program is held to complement the current exhibition “Science In Motion: The Photographic Studies of Eadweard Muybridge, Harold Edgerton and Berenice Abbott.”
