First Selectman to sign Diabetes Awareness Week proclamation

On Monday, Sept. 12 at 11:30 a.m. Peter J. Tesei , First Selectman of the Town of Greenwich will sign a proclamation declaring the week of September 26, 2016 as Greenwich’s third Diabetes Awareness Week. Through this official proclamation signing, Selectman Tesei urges all citizens to be aware of the risks of diabetes.

The proclamation signing officially announces the week of September 26, 2016, as Greenwich’s Diabetes Awareness Week. Pre-Diabetes has reached epidemic status and 86 million Americans have diabetes. Over 990,000 are in Connecticut.

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, YogaSmoga Greenwich will be hosting “Change your Future, Fight Diabetes” presentation at 6 p.m., featuring Dwayne July founder of Fit By July. The ADA RISK Test and other information will also be available at Whole Foods Market Greenwich, Greenwich YMCA and Greenwich YWCA.

The culminating event supporting the American Diabetes is the “Change the Future” chef event at the Greenwich Country Club on Tuesday, Nov. 15. This years master chefs are Chef Rui Correia, Douro Restaurant, Chef Frederic Kieffer, l’escale Restaurant, Chefs Lisa & Stephen Maronian, Sweet Lisa’s, Chef Conor Horton, The J House Restaurant, Chef Edward Varipapa, Leon’s Restaurant, Chef Marc Weber, On The Marc and Fleisher Craft Butchery. The chefs participate in a unique and interactive cooking adventure with live video feed from kitchen to ballroom. Guests enjoy a five-course dinner paired with wines specially selected by Val’s Putnam Wine & Liquors. The evenings Emcee Victor Rallo Restaurateur, Wine Critic, and TV Personality EAT! DRINK! ITALY! will guide the guests through this farm-to-plate culinary experience.

Diabetes has reached epidemic status in the United States: every 23 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. Over 30 million Americans have diabetes, over 350,000 in Connecticut, and 60,000 right in Fairfield County. They are not strangers; they are friends, neighbors and colleagues.
