Traveling upstate, the Greenwich High School boys lacrosse team picked up a thrilling victory in the CIAC class L first round, scoring in the final seconds to stun No. 3 seed Glastonbury 12-11 Wednesday afternoon.

Playing the roll of hero was Matt Baugher. While he picked up the hat trick against the Tomahawks, it was his go-ahead goal with 1.7 seconds to play in regulation that sealed the victory.

Michael Sands finished with four goals and one assist, while Addison Muir netted two goals and an assist. Will Perry took home a goal and an assist, while Bailey Savio and Jack O’Connor tallied one goal apiece.

Also adding an assist was Scooter Harrington. In addition to his goal, Savio was a solid 15-for-25 when it came to faceoff wins.

In net, Bennett Cooper was strong again, picking up seven saves for the win. Teammate Andrew Triscari also tallied a save.

With the win, it’s another familiar face Big Red will see in the CIAC class L quarters. On Saturday, Greenwich will travel up to Fairfield and battle No. 6 seed Fairfield Prep starting at 3 p.m.

And what would a class L postseason be like without Fairfield Prep and Greenwich High battling to advance in the tourney.

Last year as a No. 5 seed, Big Red took care of the Jesuits in the class L opener 11-6. En route to the Cardinals’ class L championship two years ago, the No. 2 seed Greenwich edged Fairfield Prep in the class L quarterfinals 9-8.

During Prep’s 2012 championship run, they blasted Big Red in the class L opener 15-5 and in 2011 Fairfield Prep got past GHS in the class L quarterfinals 10-9.

Going back further, GHS and Prep battled once again in the CIAC class L tourney during the 2010 season, with the Jesuits getting the better of Big Red 9-7.
