Greenwich Academy’s Class of 2016 stepped into the next phase of their lives as they exited the tent, set up just outside of the school’s front entrance, where they received their diplomas.

For many students, the moment felt surreal and had not fully sunken in. But all agreed that the senior speaker, Katalina Dale Connors, captured their feelings perfectly.

“Greenwich Academy shaped us to be leaders, but it also shaped us to be ourselves,” said Connors. “There are students who can code at a professional level, incredible athletes, students who wear no shoes for a week because of their religious beliefs—you guys amaze me with your accomplishments.”

She added, “You belong. You are good enough, talented enough. You have worked so hard and will continue to do so.”

The Katherine Hewitt Award, or Good Companion Lamp, the only award given out at the graduation, was presented to Elizabeth Keating Sands.

The teachers and administrators spoke highly of the supportive nature of the graduating seniors.

“This is an exceptional group of graduates—so much spirit and love,” said Molly King, Greenwich Academy’s head of school.

Paula Kerger, the president and CEO of PBS, also spoke to the graduates and their friends and families during the commencement. She advised the girls to surround themselves with good people and to think of their lives as journeys rather than ends.

“I liked the message of finding people to support you through your life and the road being more important than the end,” said Charlotte Winkler, a Greenwich Academy graduate.

The graduation closed with the younger generation of Greenwich Academy students dressed as flower girls, presenting the graduates full bouquets of flowers in exchange for their single yellow roses as a symbol of coming full circle and of passing the torch.
