Board of Education Appoints Interim Superintendent

At the Greenwich Board of Education meeting tonight, the Board voted to appoint Dr. Salvatore (Sal) J. Corda as Interim Superintendent, effective July 1. The contract term is for the 2016-2017 school year with flexibility should a new permanent superintendent be identified earlier than the end of the year. Dr. Corda has extensive experience as superintendent in both New York and Connecticut public school systems. He is currently consulting independently and for Cooperative Education Services (CES) in Trumbull on leadership searches and development, systemic improvement and strategic planning. His most recent tenure as superintendent was with the Norwalk Public Schools, Norwalk, for eight years (2001-2009.)

Board of Education Chair Laura Erickson said, “The Board is pleased to welcome Dr. Corda as Interim Superintendent. Dr. Corda is an experienced superintendent who will be able to lead the district during this time of transition by focusing on and continuing the work of the strategic plan.”

Dr. Corda said, “I am honored and delighted to be selected as the Interim Superintendent for the coming school year. I am committed to continuing the work of the District, building on the thoughtful, research based plan for systemic district improvement developed by Dr. McKersie and the District staff. The Board is committed to supporting and sustaining the work of the Strategic Plan, which will guide our efforts. I look forward to working with the entire Greenwich community in serving our students.”

Superintendent of Schools Bill McKersie announced his decision not to seek the renewal of his contract with the Greenwich Public Schools on April 22. His subsequent appointment as Superintendent of the Weston Public Schools was announced on May 6, 2016. Dr. McKersie’s tenure as the Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent will come to a close on June 30, 2016. Dr. Corda will be working with Dr. McKersie and administration throughout the month of June to ensure a smooth transition.

The Board’s search for a new superintendent is already underway. A Request For Proposals (RFP) has been issued for a search firm. The Board anticipates selecting a search firm by the end of June.

 

Bio Brief: Salvatore J. Corda

Dr. Corda began his career in education teaching English, Social Studies and Science at George Washington Middle School in West Hempstead, NY. Over the course of his distinguished career, in addition to his teaching role, he held the positions of Assistant Principal at Blind Brook High School and Assistant Superintendent of Business and Administration for the Blind Brook-Rye U.F.S.D. in Rye, NY; Associate Superintendent for the Greenburgh Central School District in Hartsdale, NY; Superintendent of the Peekskill City School District in Peekskill, NY and Superintendent of the Norwalk Public Schools in Norwalk, CT.

In his current role as Executive Search Consultant for Cooperative Education Services (CES) in Trumbull, CT and as an independent consultant, Dr. Corda guides districts through leadership searches and development, systemic improvement and strategic planning.

In addition to his roles in K-12 education administration, Dr. Corda has served in an Adjunct capacity at Queensboro Community College, Bayside, NY, and New York University, Stern School of Business Management Decision Laboratory. He currently serves as Adjunct Associate Professor at Southern Connecticut State University, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Study.

Demonstrating a commitment to his profession and professional growth, Dr. Corda has a vast array of experiences across disciplines and educational levels. He served on a number of committees, acting as committee chair on several, at Southern Connecticut State University, including serving as lead writer on the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy

Studies’ Superintendent Certification Program NCATE Review in 2012. He has served on the board of directors for the Learning Foundation of Putnam/Northern Westchester, the NYS

Association of Small Cities Schools Districts (ASCSD), the Norwalk Education Foundation, and has been a member of the board for the College of Westchester since 2000. Dr. Corda acted as President of the Putnam/Northern Westchester Chief School Administrators Association, and has served as a member of a myriad of professional service organizations.

Having been extensively published in newspapers and professional publications, Dr. Corda also has long history of conference presentations, both in the United States and internationally. He has received accolades and awards from his colleagues throughout his career for his leadership and service to his professional and personal communities.

Dr. Corda received a B.A. in English literature in 1969 and a M.A. in English education in 1972 from Queens College in Flushing, NY, and a Ph.D. in educational administration from New York University in New York, NY in 1988.

Dr. Corda currently resides in Purchase, NY.
