Although the Brunswick School crew team didn’t capture gold, the Bruins did fare well during the highly-challenging Stotesbury Cup Regatta.

Downstream, with a light current, little wind and light rain for finals, Brunswick’s varsity boat couldn’t quite push through to the grand final in the Boys Senior Eight, the fastest and most prestigious event at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.

In the semifinal, Dallas Jesuit (Tex.) and LaSalle (Penn.) outraced Brunswick who finished less than a second out of qualifying position. The Brunswick team of Matt Womble, William Bass, William Powers, Gamble Freydberg, Thomas Kern, Alexander Kutner, Andreas Kern, Will Marvin and coxswain Alec Esmond took third in the semis, posting a time of 4:24.870. LaSalle’s time was 4:23.890.

The Bruins had to do the always difficult task of regrouping for the Petite Final to race for seventh through 12th place. Brunswick showed character and speed by winning the Petite Final wire-to-wire, finishing with a time of 4:17.540, the second fastest time of the entire regatta. Brunswick was able to hold off a charging crew from Junipero Serra (Calif.) to finish out the weekend on s strong note. Junipero Serra’s time was clocked at 4:18.690.

Gonzaga College High School won the Grand Final of the Boys Senior Eight once again this year, posting a time of 4:16.040 in the championship heat.

Next race: New England Championships (NEIRA) in Worcester, Mass. on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday, May 28.
