The Greenwich High School girls’ lacrosse team knew playing Wilton the second time around was going to be a challenge.

The first meet-up was an overtime thriller at Cardinal Stadium, a 13-12 victory. During Friday afternoon’s meeting, with a trip to the FCIAC semifinals on the line, Big Red came out firing early and went on to upend the Warriors 16-12.

“I think we recognized that we have to take advantage of the fast break today, so we pushed it and we were successful,” Caitlin Young said. “We didn’t do too much of that the last time we played them and I think it helped us gain that lead.”

With the victory, Greenwich upped its record to 12-5 overall and advances to Monday’s FCIAC semifinals to play top-seeded Darien High School. The game, to be played at New Canaan High School, will get underway at 7 p.m.

“This feels really good because we beat them in overtime during the regular season and we knew we were better than that,” Greenwich junior Paige Mautner said. “We came out, won almost every draw control and we just dominated the field.”

Against Wilton in the FCIAC opener, Greenwich came out of the gate flying, grabbing an early 6-0 lead before the Warriors could blink.

Leading the way for Big Red in that first half was Mautner, who finished with all four of her goals in the first half. In addition, she also finished with two assists.

“We had a couple of hiccups the last few games and really wanted to use this game to get back on track,” Mautner said. “We certainly did that tonight. We wanted to make sure we controlled the game from the start, so that way we could manage it the way we wanted to. The way to do that was to get up first, utilizing the clock and working on our game management skills.”

Not to be outdone were juniors Elizabeth Lufkin and Erika Bloes, who each finished the game with three goals. In addition, senior Kathryn Harford and sophomore Genevieve DeWinters took home two goals apiece. Sophomore Maggie O’Gorman and junior Romy Villemure each contributed with one goal.

“This is great,” Young said. “We really wanted to make a stance going into the playoffs. Anything could happen in the playoffs and we are firmly believers in that. To beat Wilton twice is huge. They are super talented and are going to be talented for the next couple of years. We knew this was going to be a big one coming into it. I am really excited for the next step and to kind of continue on in the playoffs with this group.”

One of the keys for Big Red was dominating the draw controls. That’s where Villemure took over, winning a team high five on the day. Both Lufkin and O’Gorman also pitched in with two draw control wins.

“We managed the game differently in the second half and that was the biggest difference in our game play,” Young said. “We were playing to make them play us a little bit more just because we didn’t want to force things. We didn’t want a turnover or make a bad decision on attack and have it go right back down. We wanted to really execute at a high level and we wanted to be patient with our possessions. In the first half we had that run and gun and in the second half it was a little bit more deliberate.”
