Obituary: Ben Marzullo

Benjamin J. Marzullo, age 96, husband of the late Angelina (Pellicano) Marzullo, passed away on April 28 in Manchester, Conn.

Ben was born in Greenwich, Connecticut on Nov. 26, 1919, the son of the late Charles and Carmella (Intrieri) Marzullo. He attended St. Mary’s Grammar School.

Ben was drafted into the U.S. Army on Jan. 17, 1942, and proudly served his country as a member of the 632nd Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II.  He spent three years with his battalion in Australia, New Guinea and in the Philippines during the Battle of Leyte. He was wounded in combat and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded Bronze Stars for his participation in the Invasion of The Philippines and the New Guinea Campaign.

While recovering, he was shipped stateside and was part of the Army Military Police in both Lake Placid, N.Y., and Holton, Me. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 17, 1945.

After returning home, he was employed by Round Hill Farms in Greenwich as a route carrier milkman. He also worked at Arnold Bakers, and later for the Greenwich Board of Education as a bus driver, and at retirement, as a custodian at Riverside School. In 2009 he moved to Manchester to live with his daughter and son-in-law.

He leaves his daughter, Beverly Metcalf, and her husband, Todd, of Manchester; a granddaughter, Wendy Bertrand of Lunenburg, Mass. and her husband, Paul, and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Amanda Bertrand; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, Charles Marzullo of Manchester; his brothers, Frank Marzullo and Lawrence Marzullo; and his sisters, Margaret Marzullo and Mary Marzullo.

Ben’s family would like to thank all the staff of the Visiting Nurse & Health Care Services of Connecticut for the care and compassion show to him and his family during the last several months of his life. Burial will be private.
