Sailing in a cool and damp breeze of 6-8 knots off of Southport, the Greenwich High School varsity sailing team won the Fairfield Cup, which is the fleet racing championship of the Fairfield County Sailing League that was held on Saturday.

In addition to Big Red, teams from Darien High, Greens Farms Academy, Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Prep, Stamford and Staples competed.

The event is sailed in four classes: Division A 420 (double handed dinghy), Division B 420, Standard Laser (single handed) and Laser Radial. Combined low scores determine the winner.

In the overall standings, Greenwich High took home first place and the Fairfield Cup with a score of 55. Fairfield Prep was a distant second with a score of 70. Staples took home third with a score of 78 and Darien was fourth overall with a score of 105. In the laser standard, Big Red once again claimed top honors, winning three races and taking third in two more and finishing with a score of 13.

The Cardinals dominated the Division A 420 event, taking home first in five of the six races. Prep was second and finished with a score of 18.

First sailed 18 years ago, the Fairfield Cup was initiated by Pequot Yacht Club member Kevin Baker whose son dreamt of becoming an America’s Cup yacht designer. As many trophies are attached to a poignant story to memorialize a lost soul, this one has a happy ending. Baker’s son has fulfilled his dream with the design team for Oracle Team USA, currently in New York for The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series.
