Greenwich Athletes Fare Well with Greens Farms

It’s been a busy spring season for Greens Farms Academy and several athletes from the Greenwich community have stepped it up to help the Dragons reach success.

Boys Varsity Tennis

The GFA boys varsity tennis team defeated Hamden Hall by a score of 6-1 and two Greenwich athletes helped out.

In No. 1 doubles, junior Matt Smith (Purchase, N.Y.) and eighth-grader Aidan Heflin (Greenwich) won 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, JT McAllister (Norwalk) and eighth grader Jack Ramsey (Greenwich) won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

The Dragons swept in singles with strong performances by: No. 1 singles, senior Cole Rummelsburg (Fairfield); No. 2 singles, junior Will Wappler (Rowayton); No. 3 singles, freshman Jack Wolfsohn (Easton); and No. 4 singles, sophomore Sean Minson (Darien), all winning in straight sets.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse

The Dragons opened the week with a tough one against South Kent, losing by a final score of 12-6. Against Chase Collegiate School, the Dragons took an early lead to win 19-9. 

During those two games, senior Issac Manton, a Greenwich resident, was joined with freshman Zach Liston (Wilton), senior Jack Mackle (New Canaan) and eighth-grader Charlie Benson (Darien) as GFA laxmen that scored three or more goals during the week. 

The face-off was controlled by sophomore JC Foster (Darien), and the defense was led by freshman goalie Thomas Babcock (Westport).

Varsity Sailing

Tuesday, April 19, Greens Farms Academy raced at Grass Island in Greenwich against Greenwich High School, Brunswick School, and Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

GFA was represented by freshmen Griffin Segalla (Stamford) skippering for Alex Wagner (Southport), juniors Hobi Lew (Westport) skippering for Tyler Green (Westport), senior Caroline Booth (Westport) skippering for junior Will Costello (New Canaan), and senior Eliza Nixon (Rowayton) skippering for junior Joe Bentham (Old Greenwich).

GFA lost its first match to Brunswick finishing 4, 5, 6 and 3, 5, 6. GFA fell to Greenwich High School finishing 4, 5, 6 and 3, 5, 6. Against FLHS, GFA won the first two races with the following finishes: 1, 3, 5 and 1, 2, 6, and losing the third race with 3, 4, and 6 finish.

Wednesday, April 20, GFA hosted Greenwich Academy and Darien High School at Pequot Yacht Club.

GFA was represented by freshman Griffin Segalla (Stamford), sophomores Charlie Courtemanche (Norwalk), Weldon Marcus (Fairfield), juniors Noah Sonnenberg (Greenwich), Jack Sondag (Riverside), Booth, Bentham and Green. The first round was raced between GA and GFA, with GFA winning 1, 2, 5 and 1, 2, 3. In the next round, Darien beat GFA 1, 2, 5 and 1, 2, 6.

Ultimate Frisbee

On Wednesday, April 20, GFA beat The Gunnery 15-4. The team got off to another fast start, jumping out to a 6-0 lead as playing time and contributions were spread across the entire roster. Sophomore Kai Klebes (Greenwich) had a strong offensive performance and scored several goals, while sophomore Liam King (Old Greenwich) set the tone with tight man-to-man defense.
