The Greenwich High School rugby team picked up a third place finish during the highly prestigious Jesuit Classic Tournament this past weekend in Virginia.

The first game against West End saw Greenwich burst out to a quick start. Tries by Soh Nakayama and Junior Kevin Wright brought the score up within the first ten minutes. Then wings Luke Bienstock and Junior Kevin Iobbi contributed to the lead and flanker Owen Tedford scored just before the half.

Fly half Fermin Moraiz and flanker Jake Herman were a brick wall on defense. Wyndsor Doyle was a solid player at hooker and stole a number of balls in the scrum. Nakayama scored early in the second half and then Greenwich started putting its subs in and then West End scored a few tries to end the game 34-19 Greenwich.

In the deciding pool game against a strong Good Council team, Greenwich looked dominant. Junior inside center Pat McTiernan took the ball up to score the first try of the game.

Then, flanker Kevin Kumar punched it in for the last try of the half. Wing Luke Bienstock scored a try from far out and full back Connor Weigold took the ball in for the last score of the game.

Parker Kelly played well at lock and grabbed a number of lineouts. Junior inside center Zhaire House had a number of good runs and opened up the attack with his good offloads. Despite Greenwich being considerably outsized, the defense played spot on with prop Juan Garzon and fly half Fermin Moraiz standing out. The final score was 26-0.

In the semifinals, Greenwich faced a formidable Fort Hunt team. It was a clash in the first half with Greenwich trailing 7-0. Both teams were playing very physical and despite Greenwich being outsized they held their own. In the second half Fort Hunt scored two tries and a kick for points to end the game 24-0.

In the match for third place, Greenwich played Charlotte Catholic.

Despite the fact that Greenwich was missing five starters and several subs due to injury, it looked in top form. Bienstock played very well and scored two minutes in, followed by a try by outside center Kevin Wright within the first five minutes, who also had a strong performance throughout the game.

On the 18th minute, Wright caught an offload by Bienstock to tally his second try of the game. A minute later, lock Jake Herman broke loose and ran sixty yards to set up Nat Ung for a try. Charlotte broke the line to score just before the half. Greenwich made a number of changes to the roster for the second half.  Bienstock weaved through multiple defenders to score for the second time in the game but Charlotte responded just after.

Fly half Fermin Moriz broke through to give Greenwich its final try of the tournament, and Charlotte scored with no time left. Nat Ung stood out in the second day with his hard running and solid defense.  Junior, Ian Pearson also played very well at No. 8 with many good runs and physical defense. The final score was 36-21.

Up next for Greenwich is its rivalry match against Xavier this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Greenwich High’s Cardinal Stadium.
