The Greenwich Police Department Silver Shield Association has funded the training of many yoga teachers who are part of Exhale to Inhale. Exhale to Inhale is a non-profit organization that brings yoga to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in shelters and community centers throughout New York City, the Hudson Valley, Long Island, and now Connecticut.

Since its inception in May of 2013, Exhale to Inhale has been empowering survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to reclaim their lives through the healing and grounding practice of yoga. In 2015 alone, Exhale to Inhale taught 500 classes in 25 partner facilities, reaching over 450 survivors.

“As you can imagine, teaching yoga to those who have survived a traumatic experience requires a very different skill set than teaching a conventional yoga class. Things such as language to use and avoid, how to set up the room to create a safe space, how to conduct yourself as a teacher, how to use physical or verbal assists, and what to do if a student experiences a traumatic trigger while in class, are all things these teachers must be prepared to handle. We are proud to support such an organization,” stated Sergeant Special Victims Section Mark Zuccarella. Exhale to Inhale classes will begin to be offered at the Greenwich YWCA in March.
