The Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association takes great pleasure in announcing that Garland Allen is this year’s recipient of the seventh annual Coach’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
A luncheon will be held to honor Mr. Allen at 11:30 am on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Greenwich Country Club located on 19 Doubling Road in Greenwich.
Allen served the Greenwich Public Schools with distinction for many years as a teacher of Health and Physical Education. Garland was also the Director of Athletics for 18 years and coached football, basketball and track at Greenwich High School. Three of his former team captains (Taylor Baldwin, Steve Young and Ceci Hopp) were some of the most accomplished athletes in the history of Greenwich High School sports.
Upon leaving GHS, Garland continued his involvement with high school athletics as the Director of Athletics at Ridgewood High School before being appointed the Director of Wellness for the Ridgewood, New Jersey Public School System.
Garland is a former recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and is a former Connecticut High School Coach of the year. Garland is currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at the NYU Institute of Sports Management, Media and Business and is also a member of the Advisory Board for the NYU Sports and Society Program.
His contributions to Greenwich and the impact that he has had on the many young adults with whom he has come into contact as an administrator, teacher and coach in the communities he has served are immeasurable.
The Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association, with its mission of supporting youth sports in the community, established the Coach’s Lifetime Achievement Award to annually recognize an individual or individuals who best exemplified the spirit of excellence and commitment to the young athletes of our community over an extended period of time.
More than simply honoring wins and losses, this award recognizes a coach’s deep understanding of character and instilling confidence, teamwork, commitment, fairness, honor, sportsmanship and, most of all, the love of the game.
Along with the award, each year the Old Timers make a $1,000 donation to a youth sports program in the community in the recipient’s name. John Kavanaugh, Harold Catanzaro, Larry Jones, Bruce Fuller, Tom Smith, Peter Gasparino and Joe Vancho are the previous recipients of the Coach’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
