Karen Newman is a former Greenwich resident and an “All American Athlete” who earned a silver medal at the 2012 Age Group Triathlon World Championships in New Zealand.

“I just loved running. It’s where I found my joy. It’s just me,” said Newman.

When Newman was 46, she was diagnosed with advanced, stage-three breast cancer. Newman considers her cancer a blessing because of bulimia, another disease she was battling at the time of her diagnosis.

“Three weeks before my diagnosis, I had hit rock bottom. I no longer wanted to live. May addiction had stolen everything. I was lying to my husband, my children, to my colleagues, everyone. I’m here t say addictions really do love the silence. They fester there and they can kill you and steal your joy. When I heard the Just Three Words “Karen, it’s cancer” it ignited something on the inside, a desire to live that I hadn’t had in so long,” said Newman.

She will be sharing her story of hope at the Family Center’s Center for HOPE Luncheon as the keynote speaker.

“It’s such a fantastic cause. There are a lot of kids that benefit. There’s also a lot of kids that are struggling. What could be better than supporting this amazing organization that does so much to empower children and give them hope,” said Newman. “There’s hope for everybody, no matter the challenge that you have in front of you, there is hope. I’ve learned that our great, big challenges and trials can be opportunities to grow, stretch, and discover gifts that they never would have had without the trials. I’m here to say trials can be good and anybody can get over anything. There’s hope for all of us,” said Newman.

The Center for HOPE Luncheon will be on May 3 at 11:00 at the Wee Burn Country Club in Darien. For tickets and more information, please visit www.familycenters.org.

Newman says those in attendance will receive a complimentary copy of her book Just Three Words and she will be donating 10 percent of profits to Family Centers.
