When Joe Kaliko and Chicken Joe’s team up once again today for their third annual Dough for Donations fundraiser, it surely won’t be the first, or last time, the Needs Clearing House has offered a “hand up” (as opposed to a “hand out”) to non-profits and families of Fairfield County and Greenwich.

Benefitting both Chicken Joe’s “Ride for Kids” and the Needs Clearing House (NCH), today’s fundraiser will include pizza, salad, cookies, ice cream and drinks, with proceeds going directly to the two charities. Pizza will also be available to-go and the event will be held at Christ Church from 5 to 10 p.m.

Founded in 2013 by Kaliko and State Representative Fred Camillo (R-151), the NCH has made it their mission to learn about the needs in the community and then try to find ways to meet those needs.

From raising funds for handicapped-accessible vehicles to donating used cars and fixing them up for those in need, the NCH has quickly become a recognizable resource by connecting problems with the right local initiatives.

“Being all volunteer allows us, in contrast to the “big box” charities, to put 100 cents of every dollar raised toward funding our projects,” Kaliko said. “Donors know their money goes to make lives better and not provide salaries or perks to charity officials.”

Kaliko says that while many people are generous by nature, they often have no idea what the needs are. He added that the needs tend to find NCH these days.

In order to take on certain projects, Needs Clearing House resorts to its growing network of sponsors and periodic fund raising. NCH creates partnerships with other charities to get larger projects funded.

When it comes to raising funds for medical related needs, NCH partners with Amy’s Angels. For addressing homelessness and hunger, it’s the Helping Hands Outreach and the Bridgeport Rescue Mission that help.

For aiding the disabled, partnering with NCH is the Disability Resource Network, and for addressing the needs of those suffering from domestic violence, Mother for Others helps raise the proper funds needed.

While the NCH website cites 98 different accomplishments to date, Kaliko says it is becoming difficult to keep up due to the volume of work the all-volunteer not for profit is doing.

Exclusively in the Greenwich area, the NCH has helped the Nathanial Witherell Nursing Home, Neighbor to Neighbor, Greenwich Alliance for Education, the Greenwich Housing Authority and many more.

Partnering with the Greenwich-based Mothers for Others, the NCH put on a successful Christmas toy drive last year.

They also recently raised funds for a 4-year-old boy’s cornea transplant as an attempt to give the boy, Muhammad, the gift of sight.

In Bridgeport, Kaliko raised about $2,000 dollars within two hours to support a family of a 14-year-old boy who was shot and killed on Christmas Eve.

Current projects include raising funds for the Greenwich Alliance for Education’s AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program and fund raising for the Nathanial Witherell’s Alzheimer Music Program.
