In the second round of the CIAC class LL tournament, the Greenwich High boys basketball team came out ready to take on the No. 4 seeded Weaver High team, but couldn’t keep up as the Beavers bounced back with a strong second quarter to counter Greenwich’s hot start.

Weaver, the defending class M champions, advances to the LL quarterfinals with the 89-67 win.

The Cardinals finished the season with a 12-8 overall record and returned to the state tournament after missing out on last year’s postseason festivities.

“We improved and had seniors who came in everyday committed to themselves, whether they played or not,” said GHS head coach Pat Heaton. “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

As the season ended for the Cardinals Thursday night, so did the high school careers of an impressive senior class that head coach Heaton commended following the game.

“These are eight of the finest young men not only on the court, but in the classroom,” said Heaton of his seniors. “One day they’re going to be a lot more successful than me.”

In fact, all eight seniors contributed points in their final game wearing Cardinal Red.

Seniors Mike Gianopoulos (7 pts), Henry Golden (6 pts), Kieran Carroll (6 pts), Kevin Woodring (4 pts), Joseph Lanni (4 pts), Quinlin Carroll (3 pts), Victor Simonte (3 pts) and Ryan Harford (2 pts) all left their mark in Thursday night’s second-round game.

Conor Harkins finished with a team-high 25 points, behind eight three-pointers in the loss.

For Weaver, it was guards Jaecee Martin and KeAndre Fair who led the Beavers with a combined 57 points between the two. Chaylyn Martin added 11 points while the 6-foot-6 Marques Williams-Bey had a solid performance on the glass.

After Harkins hit his second long-distance shot of the second quarter and put Greenwich within three points, Weaver came out with a high-tempo attack and went on a 19-2 run to close out the half.

Greenwich would chip away at the lead in the second half, but technical fouls on Gianopoulos and Harkins would let Weaver extend their lead for good.

The No. 4 seed Weaver will take on the No. 12 seed Simsbury on March 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Check back tomorrow for additional quotes from GHS seniors on their final game against Weaver.
