After finishing the year with a 11-8 regular season record, the Greenwich High boys basketball team is back in the CIAC class LL tournament after missing out on last year’s postseason by just one win.

The No. 20 seed Cardinals will not have to travel far to play the No. 13 seed Black Knights of Stamford High in the first round on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m.

The two FCIAC foes met earlier this year when Stamford took down the Cardinals in a 48-37 game at home.

“Stamford is a well coached team that executes its game plan to perfection,” said GHS head coach Pat Heaton. “They have the defensive player of the year in Yan Carlos Marte and the league’s leading scorer in Jay DeitVo.”

In their lone meeting this year, Stamford’s Jay DeVito scored 23 points while Greenwich’s Conor Harkins was held to just seven.

“Also, we must execute our offense the entire to get easier shots for Conor Harkins.  The did a superb job limiting his touches last game,” Heaton added.

Stamford will once again host Greenwich, but now with a trip to the second round on the line.

If the Cardinals are to advance, either the No. 4 seed Weaver High or No. 29 seed New Milford High will await them on Thursday, March 10. If a quarterfinals berth is in the Cardinals’ future, they will get a matchup with a tough non-conference opponent. The likely candidates include No. 5 Ledyard High or No. 12 Simsbury High.

Greenwich is one of 10 FCIAC teams that make up the 32-team class LL tournament and is one of two FCIAC matchups in the opening round.

Danbury High grabbed the No. 2 seed following a 18-2 regular season record. Trumbull High claimed the No. 6 seed while No. 16 seed Westhill High will face off against No. 17 Fairfield Ludlowe in a first-round matchup.

“Some of the top seeds are in our conference,” said GHS head coach Pat Heaton following their most recent game. He cited his team’s 69-64 win over Trumbull High and a game that slipped away against Danbury High.

“We believe we have the talent to play with a lot of people.”

The top-seeded Fairfield Prep team will look to defend their class LL championship and could potentially see Westhill High in a rematch of last year’s title game.

This year’s title game will be held on March 19 or 20 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
