The top-seeded Greenwich High hockey team took care of business Wednesday night, defeating Ridgefield High 3-0 in a physical FCIAC semifinal match and securing their return to the conference championship game.

Behind a shutout performance from senior Nick Bozzuto in goal and a pair of goals from senior forward Michael Mozian, the Cardinals will now advance to play in the finals against St. Joseph High who took down the second-seeded Darien High earlier in the evening at Terry Conners Ice Rink.

“I knew we had to come out strong for this game because it was very close against this team last time. We came out fired up and ready to go,” said GHS goalie Bozzuto. “We’re 1-1 against St. Joe’s on the year. The second time we played them, I think we took our first win against them for granted. Hopefully we won’t take them lightly in the championship.”

The game would remain scoreless for only 90 seconds before Mozian put a swift move on a RIdgefield defender and found the back of the net to give the Cardinals the early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers would have their chances with multiple power plays in the second and third periods, but couldn’t cash in with a goal and were held scoreless in the loss.

“Bozzuto really showed a lot of character today in the way he played, got himself square and how hard he fought to get the puck,” said GHS head coach Bob Russel. “I think our penalty kill was excellent tonight.”

In the third period, Colin Kelly set up a shot on goal from about 15-feet from the goal and slapped a frozen rope shot into the top half of the net to bring the lead to 2-0 in the third period.

An empty net opportunity for Mozian again made the final score 3-0 and puts Greenwich in the championship game once again.

“The guys have believed all year that they could get back to this game,” said Russsel.
