League of Women Voters Hosts “Who Elected the Donors?”

money-and-politics-fi

The League of Women Voters of Greenwich (LWVG) will present “Who Elected the Donors? Campaign Finance in the Age of Super PACs” on Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m., at Greenwich Library, Cole Auditorium.

In the midst of the 2016 presidential election (and on Super-Tuesday), the League of Women Voters of Greenwich is hosting an informative discussion on the evolution of our current system of campaign finance and its effects on our elected representatives and our democracy. In the aftermath of both the Buckley and Citizens United decisions, the way in which we select candidates and run campaigns has been visibly altered. The League of Women Voters has tirelessly advocated for campaign financing systems that protect the public’s right to know, combat undue influence, allow candidates to compete more effectively for public office and encourage maximum citizen participation in the political process.

The discussion will be both timely and informative. Michael Waldman is President of the Brennan Center, a nonpartisan law and policy institute at NYU Law School. He is a constitutional lawyer, author and expert on the presidency and American democracy. Karen Hobert Flynn is the Senior Vice President for Strategy and Programs at Common Cause. She was the Chair of Common Cause CT and worked closely with former Gov. Jodi Rell to help pass sweeping campaign finance reform legislation in Connecticut in 2005. State Rep. Livvy Floren was re-elected to her eighth term this past November representing the 149th District (Greenwich/Stamford). State Rep. Floren has been a staunch advocate for good government, transparency, and clean campaign financing.

Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7. Mr. Waldman will be available to sign copies of his new book, The Fight to Vote at 8:30 p.m.

Please RSVP at Sheila.LWVGreenwich@gmail.com to ensure there will be an ample supply of Mr. Waldman’s books on hand.
