On Wednesday, Feb. 24, Greenwich students in grades six and seven in Greenwich public and independent schools will experience the power of Beethoven’s music in a live concert of the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra. They will listen to the sounds of nature through Beethoven’s imagination in his “Pastoral Symphony,” hear the dramatic sounds of his “Prometheus Overture,” and thrill to his triumphant Symphony No. 5.

Every year approximately six thousand students experience a live symphony concert as part of their music education. The concerts are offered, free of charge, during the school day to students in grades two through seven. This program, created by Tara Simoncic, Associate Conductor of the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra, is designed to introduce Greenwich schoolchildren to the exciting world of classical music. Under the leadership of Sandra Heikel, music teacher at the International School at Dundee, a customized curriculum is developed and provided to school music teachers to prepare the students for the concert. This will be the 35th year of the highly acclaimed Young People’s Concerts. The series is made possible through foundations, GSO fund-raising events, individual contributions, and the Greenwich Board of Education.

The snow date for this performance is Thursday, Feb. 25. The concerts will be held at the Central Middle School auditorium. Because of the smaller size of the substitute auditorium, seating for parents and members of the public will not be offered. For more information, call the Symphony office at 203-869-2664.
