McMahon Takes Down Greenwich Boys Hoops in FCIAC Showdown

Competing in a playoff-type atmosphere Wednesday night, the Greenwich High boys basketball team fell to Brien McMahon High 47-45 in the final seconds of regulation.

With both teams on the bubble of an FCIAC playoff berth, it may as well have been a play-in game with the postseason on the line.

McMahon’s Eric Day hit the game-winning shot with 3.7 seconds left to lift the Senators over the Cardinals in dramatic fashion.

“I like big moments and I knew I could hit it,” McMahon’s Day said following the game.

“I took the shot with confidence. We knew Greenwich would come out with a big crowd. It was a close game all the way through, but we really stepped it up in the end. Winning this game will bring us more confidence going into our next one. That one will be a must-win too.”

With two minutes left in the game and the score knotted at 42-42, McMahon’s Jahmerikah Green-Younger found an open Anthony Burden who hit the long-range shot to go up 45-42.

However, the Cardinals would respond with a three-pointer of their own from Conor Harkins to tie the game yet again.

Day would then find the bottom of the net with his 18-foot jumper and break the hearts of the host team in the process.

“Eric is a big game player and he normally steps up in the big time and he did again tonight,” said McMahon head coach Ken Dustin. “I’m very proud of him. He got a great open look and all I ask of these guys is to take the open look.”

With the victory, McMahon improves to 12-7 overall and 8-7 in FCIAC play, overtaking Greenwich for the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference as of Wednesday night.

“We needed one out of one coming into tonight and we need one out of one when we play Ludlowe coming up. These guys understand the importance of it.”

Green-Younger led McMahon with 16 points, five rebounds and two assists while his teammate Anthony Burden pitched in 14 points and a solid performance controlling the paint. David Civil added 11 points and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.

For the Cardinals, Mike Gianopoulos and Ryan Clark both scored 12 points while Harkins added seven of his own. Greenwich came back to tie the Senators twice in the final quarter of play, and a last-second shot attempt at the buzzer came up short.

“The kids fought hard, but we didn’t make the shots we needed to make,” said GHS head coach Patrick Heaton. “We still have two regular season games to play and we’re in the state tournament. We’d like to finish out on a strong point, but tonight is disappointing.”

For Greenwich (7-7, 9-8), an away game at Darien High is scheduled for next Monday at 7:00 p.m. before the team honors their eight seniors at home against New Canaan High next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
