Malcolm S. MacGruer, of Madison, Conn., died on Feb. 2, in his former hometown of Greenwich.
Born June 7, 1921 in Albany, N.Y., the son of John A. and Lois S. MacGruer, he was the husband of Margaret Clark MacGruer for 57 years. He is survived by his daughter, Amanda MacGruer Davis (husband Bob), of Cos Cob, and his son, Duncan MacGregor MacGruer, and grandson, MacKenzie Clark MacGruer, of Roswell, Ga.
A 1943 graduate of Williams College, Malcolm was captain of his lacrosse team, a founding member of the a cappella Williams Octet, choir leader, college carriloneur, head cheerleader, and a member of Zeta Psi.
Following service in the Second World War—he was an officer in the United States Marine Corps serving in the 2nd Chinese Commando Army in Japanese occupied mainland China—he served his college as a member of the Williams Alumni Association, class secretary, class agent, and class president. He was a recipient of The Joseph’s Coat Award, given to a member of a post-50th Reunion Class held in high esteem by the college and alumni.
Malcolm became an officer in sales and marketing with Richardson Vicks Inc., retiring in 1986, and was on the advisory council for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores.
While living in Greenwich, he served his community as a member of the RTM, as a trustee and member of the executive committee of the board of the Greenwich Hospital, and as trustee and chairman of the Round Hill Community Church.
Retiring to Madison, he wrote three historical novels, served on committees of the Madison Beach Club and the Scranton Public Library, and on the advisory board of the Goodspeed Opera House.
The interment service will be private. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on March 5 at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, in Greenwich.
