Trailing Hamden Hall by nine at the break, the Brunswick basketball team outscored the Hornets 40-26 in the second half for a FAA confidence-building win, 60-55.
Tonight’s victory inside Dann Gym avenged a 20-point setback to Hamden Hall earlier this season. With the win, the Bruins improved to 7-11 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
In the opening minutes of the game, a 20-point Hamden Hall victory was taking shape as the Hornets built a commanding 21-6 lead only 10 minutes into the first half.
The Bruins countered, closing out the half with a strong 14-8 run, ignited by a three-pointer from junior Cam Kelly at 7:53. The Brunswick run cut the deficit to 29-20 at the break.
The Hornets held their lead until the Bruins started their decisive second half run, as Graham Pierce nailed a baseline three to tie the game at 36 apiece at 11:24.
Brunswick took the lead on its next possession as Kelly nailed another three from the same spot as Pierce did moments before, giving Brunswick its first lead since 2-0 to open the game..
The Bruins then went on to build a small cushion, but Hamden Hall cut it to 52-50 before junior Charlie Sealy nailed a three from the wing for a 55-50 advantage with 2:06 left to play.
Brunswick kept the Hornets in check the rest of the way for the 60-55 conference win.
Three Bruins hit double-figures in scoring as senior Nacho Nwana led the way with 18 points, while Kelly and Pierce finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Sealy added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Bruins out-rebounded the Hornets 30-23, but Hamden Hall held a commanding lead in free throws, hitting 13-for-20 from the charity stripe, compared to 4-for-4 from the hosts. Brunswick finished with seven three-pointers on 29 attempts.
The Bruins return to Dann Gym on tomorrow, hosting Hotchkiss in a non-league tilt slated for a 3 p.m. start.
