Greenwich Swim Team Tops Rival Prep In Battle of Unbeatens

The Greenwich High School boys swimming and diving team knew they were in for a challenge during Saturday afternoon’s meet against rival Fairfield Prep.

Both teams entered the GHS pool undefeated, however it was Big Red that came away with the victory, besting Prep 122-64.

Both teams, entered the meet undefeated, and put lots of energy into their best performances of the season. In general, Big Red swimmers came through to win several close races, and along with a victory in the diving, Greenwich took first in 10 of the 12 events.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 34-12 advantage after just three events.

The team of Jack Montesi, Aedan Lewis, Nick Handali and Nick Hyden won the opening medley relay with a time of 1:38.33. The foursome of Matt Li, Joshua King, Alex Jahan and Conrad Moss was barely touched out of second with its 1:40.55.

Pat Clisham and Ray Warner followed with a gold and silver performance in the 200-yard freestyle, and Jahan, Lewis and Stephan Todorovic swept the top three places in the individual medley.

After Prep sophomore Oliver Rus won the 50-yard freestyle with an outstanding 22.07 seconds, the Cardinals’ divers soared to top three sweep. Devon Satir led the way at 282.45, with Sergei Shaw grabbing the silver at 254.30 and Michael McNulty topped the 200 point mark for the first time and took third with 213.30 points.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Jahan showed his competitive grit, bearing down on Prep’s top swimmer Guido Balderrama in the final 25 yards to win 52.73 to 52.96. Clisham was close behind at 53.52.

Montesi made short work of the 100-yard freestyle, winning by over three seconds with a blistering time of 46.85. He was supported by Hyden’s second place time of 50.09.

Freshman Stephan Todorovic took an early lead in the 500-yard freestyle and held on to win by touching in at 5:01.10. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Prep stayed even with Jahan and Moss in the first two legs before Clisham and Hyden pulled away in the three second victory 1:30.45 to 1:33.97.

After Montesi’s 53.22 won the backstroke by over a second, Greenwich’s Joshua King and Aedan Lewis feel a touch short of Prep’s Oliver Rus’s winning time of 1:00.06. King touched in at 1:00.50, Lewis 1:00.79.

Prep took a narrow lead on the first two legs of the closing 400-yard freestyle relay, despite season best efforts by Todorovic and Moss. Clisham’s 49.61 brought the Cards back to even and Montesi closed out the deal with his 47.35, bringing Greenwich the victory 3:20.38 to 3:22.03.

Both teams left the Greenwich pool knowing that they had been pushed to their best performances of the year and looking forward to meeting again in the class LL championships.
