Greenwich High kept it close in the end, but couldn’t complete the comeback against Westhill, losing 57-54.

The Greenwich High boys basketball team pulled within three points of Westhill High with under a minute left in the game, but couldn’t capitalize in their final two possessions and fell to the Vikings 57-54 Friday night.

The Cardinals’ last minute rally was cut short when highly-contested three-pointer wouldn’t fall for Conor Harkins followed by an inbounds pass that hit the ceiling in a full-court pass attempt.

“They really made us work hard,” Greenwich head coach Pat Heaton said. “We got back into the game by running and playing good defense. We gave them everything they could handle and we had our chances at the end of the game to tie it up.”

The Cardinals limited the Vikings to 25 second half points, but fell victim to a 6-0 run to start the second half.

Mike Gianopolous picked up two early fouls in the game’s first four minutes and was forced to sit for the remainder of the half after contributing an early five points for the Cardinals. He finished with 11 points and was a crucial part of the Cardinal comeback that fell just short.

“We have kids that can step up if I go out,” Gianopolous said. “There were a couple of tough calls and it was a tough In-bound from the opposite side of the court. They’re the defending champions. We knew it was going to be a tough game”

For the Westhill Vikings, Tyrell Alexander finished with 19 points and Voshon Nattael added 10 in the win. With the win, the Vikings moved to 3-2 overall and gave the Cardinals (3-2) their second loss in the process.

Despite knocking down five shots from behind the arc, including one which he was fouled on, Conor Harkins couldn’t connect in the second-to-last possession for the Cardinals after being tightly guarded, even coming off consecutive screens.

“Coming into the defending champions’ house on a Friday night is obviously going to be a tough task,” Harkins said after the game. “I think we proved we can hang with anyone and we had a shot at the end. We’re just going to move forward and hopefully get the next one.

Harkins led the Cardinals with 19 points, followed by Kieran Carroll who added 12.

The Cardinals will take on Wilton High at home on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
