You might notice a new sign at the corner of Arch Street and Greenwich Ave. It is the first of nine Historic District Markers to be placed throughout Greenwich.

“It’s more than just a marker. It’s an educational tool not only for residents, but visitors, to understand the importance of our history of Greenwich,” said First Selectman Peter Tesei.

This sign marks the Municipal Center Historic District and it’s surrounded by buildings like Havemeyer, Town Hall, Old Town Hall, and the former post office.

“It’s a beautiful sign and it gives us not only a map, but the history of the area,” said Diane Fox of the Greenwich Preservation Network.

“I think of this area as the epicenter of the entire Town. When you think about Greenwich being roughly 48-50 square miles, the nucleus of activity began here,” said Tesei.

The project was initiated by the Greenwich Preservation Network of the Greenwich Historical Society and the signs were funded by the Greenwich 375th Fund.

“This is a Town invested in making the town a better place to live,” said Davidde Strackbein.

Officials say the next historic marker will go in the Fourth Ward.
