The start of Saturday’s game between Brunswick and Westminster didn’t go as smoothly as Bruins head coach Jarrett Shine wanted it to, but when the clock hit zero, Brunswick sat victorious with a 28-14 win on senior night.

“It was nice to get the seniors in the game,” Shine said following the win. “We didn’t play our best game and we talk about it over and over every week. We got to continue to get better and we’re not doing it. Something has got to change and we’re going to figure that out and adjust next week.”

Quarterback Nick Henkel completed 11 of 26 pass attempts for 172 yards to go with three touchdowns and an interception.

The Bruins turned the ball over on their first two drives of the game, with the first coming off a botched snap on their first play from scrimmage.

The second turnover would be credited to Westminster’s Connor Brennan who picked off Henkel and returned it 15 yards to the goal line. The Martlets would capitalize with a touchdown pass to build a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Bruins would march back at the end of the first quarter with a play action bootleg as Henkel found Harrison Caponiti in the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the quarter.

“I think we got in a little trouble early,” Caponiti said. “Henkel stayed cool and was a good leader.”

The sophomore made his first start in place of the injured senior tight end Kieran Dowley. The Bruins were also without senior running back Jason Kennedy.

“The seniors are a great group of guys. They’re really good athletes. Anything I had trouble with they were helping me out with. The leadership on the offense was great today.”

Caponiti led Brunswick with 55 receiving yards on the day as he brought in three catches and Cameron Kelly would be the recipient of the other two touchdown passes from Henkel. Junior Jaydin Knight led the Bruins’ rushing attack as he ran the ball 14 times for 66 yards.

Special teams would make the difference as the second quarter began with Brunswick leading 7-6.

After holding Westminster and their mobile quarterback Greg Livingston to a three and out, Brunswick blocked a punt that landed in the arms of Justin Knight who took it the near 40-yard distance for the score.

The Bruins held Westminster without a score for the remainder of the half, as Brunswick scored again on the last play of the half as Henkel found Kelly in the back of the end zone to bring their lead up to 21-6 at the break.

However, after four scoreless drives, Westminster came out of the half with their own 13-play 71-yard drive to cut Brunswick’s lead to 21-14.

For the Martlets, Isaiah Green ran for 61 yards on 18 carries and Livingston ran the quarterback keeper 11 times for just 21 yards.

Ricardo Vazquez and Delando Clarke would both catch touchdown passes from Livingston, but the Brunswick defense held the quarterback to just 5-for-15 passing and adding an interception to seal the win in the fourth quarter.

Henkel and Kelly hooked up again in the fourth quarter to make it 28-14 and to bring the Bruins’ record to 7-1.

In the regular season finale, Brunswick will travel to Cheshire Academy with hopes to get back to their style of play.

“We got back into a little bit of a rhythm, but we still didn’t get a chance to play our type of football,” Shine said.” We miss Jason Kennedy, but Jaydin Knight did a very good job of running and finding holes. He’s a junior so he’s still in a position where he can get better as a football player.”
