Yoga Classes Benefit Domestic Violence Program

On Sunday, Oct. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., yoga studios across Greenwich are uniting in common compassion to prevent Domestic Violence (DV) in children’s lives as well as support the Stop Abuse Campaign.

Be Shri Yoga (Riverside) and Kaia Yoga (Glenville and Old Greenwich) will offer their regularly scheduled Sunday classes on Oct. 25, but will ask for a minimum $20 donation for drop-ins and a suggested donation for regular studio members. Tote Bags with coupons, gifts and gift cards will be provided.

Change takes tremendous courage and yoga gives the skill sets for these woman to feel strong and safe again to catapult them into more protective actions for their families and themselves and to break the patterns that keep them in the state of the victim.”

Barry Goldstein, DV Director of Research for the Stop Abuse Campaign, said “Yoga is one of the ways experts recommend to relieve the stress of surviving exposure to domestic violence or child abuse, so that victims and their children can heal.”

Greenwich resident Jill Gilbert Callahan was recently appointed the Board Chair of the Stop Abuse Campaign. “According to the CDC Adverse Childhood Experiences study, a child who witnesses domestic violence in their home is at a higher risk for not just emotional issues – addiction, alcoholism, depression – but at an increased risk for chronic disease later in life – diabetes, cancer, heart disease,” said Jill.

Last year in Greenwich, the YWCA Domestic Abuse Services answered 16 to 21 hotline calls a day and counseled 2,411 adults and 359 children. It also sheltered 59 people, including 32 children.
