It started back in 2009 with the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development-

“Essentially what that is, is a plan for the Town for the next 10 years,” said Tesei.

First Selectman Peter Tesei says this plan specifically included creating green space in downtown Greenwich, so a committee of about 30 people was created to fulfill this part of the plan.

“They met for over 21 months and came up with several recommendations on how improve the vibrancy and future of the central Greenwich business district, and the residential areas that surround it,” said Tesei.

And on Monday afternoon, the new and improved Greenwich Common was opened.

The project’s landscape architect John Conte says the area was not as accessible before the remodel.

“The rectangular shape of this was speaking to us and we realized that creating this rectangle an this green in the middle was the way to go,” said Conte.

And although the park has a new look, there is still some history left. The game and picnic table you see were used in the World’s Fair.

“You can find them in parks from NYC all he way to San Fran,” said Conte.

Conte says he was more than happy to work on this project because it is where he and his wife had their first date 30 years ago.

“I hope this park provides that same kind of wonderful opportunity for romantics of the future,” said Conte.

“People are going to look in a hundred years and say, ‘wow, those people got it right. Look at what they have here’,” said Tesei.
