With less than two weeks until the CIAC and state Opens, Greenwich High School girls swim and dive (7-2) is poised to make a run for a second straight LL title after taking care of business against Danbury High School.

“I think at this point of the season everybody is really just focused on swimming races well and with a lot of focus” head coach Lorrie Hokayem said following a 101-70 victory. “We’re really focused on the little things. We’re spending a lot of time on turns, starts and race strategy. Today was a nice meet for us to work on those things”

The lady Cardinals got off to a quick start by placing 1-2-3 in the one-meter dive. Annabelle Pollack (217.85 points), Catherine McCarthy (204.50) and Olivia DiLascia (189.30) swept the event, proving the depth of one of the state’s premier diving teams.

Eden Kaufman took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.16, while Lillian Clisham secured an individual victory in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:23.34.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Louisa Bjerke and Emily Warner placed within .12 seconds of each other to take first and second place, respectively.

Greenwich would also place first and second in both the 200-yard medley and freestyle relays, as the team of Ainsleigh Winget, Brooke Collins, Taylor Schinto and Sophia Jahan clocked in at 1:55:64 to clinch the medley relay. The foursome of Kortney Knudson, Bjerke, Collins and Jahan took first in the freestyle relay with a 1:45.33 time.

Danbury’s Kimberly Meerman would record 12 points for the Hatters as she took the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly competitions.

With the postseason looming for Big Red, the second-year head coach cited the toughness of CIAC teams like Ridgefield High School and others pose, but knows soon it will be all hands on deck in hopes of improving on last year’s second-place finish at the State Open and raising another LL banner.

“We’re looking for a good LL meet and we’re hoping to repeat there,” Hokayem said. “The Opens is a fun meet and it should be an exciting one this year because there are a lot of good teams out there.”
