The Greenwich High School football team is 2-1 so far this season, and on Friday night, the Cardinals faced Trumbull on the road under the lights.

The Eagles get the ball first and move down field. Markeese Woods runs this one into the end zone on a 8 play scoring drive. The 2 point conversion is no good and Trumbull is up 6-0 after just over 2 minutes of play.

Cardinals’ first possession of the game- the Eagles defense stops the Cardinals from advancing here, but then an offsides call gives the Cardinals a first down and new life.

Quarterback Frank Alfano finds an open Tyler Farris who runs it in for a touchdown- kick is good and Greenwich is up 7-6.

The next possession for both teams gets bit ugly- Trumbull snaps the ball into quarterback John McElroy’s face and then an incomplete pass makes it a Greenwich ball.

Greenwich will also fumble the snap and punt to close the drive.

But then things start looking up for the Cardinals offense. QB Nic Smoller fakes a handoff and then completes to Henry Saleeby for a first down. that results in this TD run by Luke Bienstock. Cardinals lead 14-6.

The Eagles answer and return the kickoff to the Greenwich 13 yard line. McElroy connects with Dan Hoffmann- two point conversion is a success and it’s all tied up at 14 a piece.

Hoffmann starts off the second quarter with another touchdown to put the Eagles up 20-14.

Eagles defense then forces a Greenwich field goal- Soh Nakayama gets it between the posts to make the score 20-17 Trumbull.

Nakayama is back with this onside kick- Greenwich recovers it at the Eagles 49, but it will not translate into a Greenwich score.

In the last play of the first half, McElroy is patient until he spots an open Dustin Siquiera- that’s a 25 yard completion putting the Eagles ahead 28-17.

Farris will score one more TD in the second half for the Cardinals, but it’s not enough. Greenwich falls to Trumbull 28-23.

The Cardinals have homecoming up next. They will face New Canaan at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m.
