I’m sure you know you that you can bring your garbage and recycling down to Holly Hill, but did you know that you can take home a few books while you’re here? The Greenwich Book Swap Shed at Holly Hill Recycling Center is home to thousands of books available for residents to enjoy.

“We’ve got children’s books in one spot, mysteries in another. We’ve got non-fiction paper back, non-fiction oversized. Novels of course,” said co-founder Doug Francefort.

Co-founder Doug Francefort began recycling books at Holly Hill back in 1972.

“We were down here and started to get some books in. We put them on the table, people started to take them. Then we packed them up and bring them out the next Saturday. It just grew and grew and grew,” said Francefort.

The official Greenwich Book Shed opened in 1995, and it is now celebrating its 20th birthday. The shed is ran entirely by volunteers and has over 3,000 books, cassettes, and videos in its custom built library.

“I have been coming tot he Book Shed since I moved to Greenwich in 1996. I joined a book club and someone asked if I have ever been to the Shed. I asked what the Book Shed was, and was told about it. I’ve been coming ever since,” said Susanna Trudeau.

The Book Shed is totally free and sees about 150 customers everyday it’s open.

“We all kinds of people, people with children and they know exactly where to go,” said Francefort.

Some customers even bring books from the shed to nursing homes, schools, and the cancer center at the hospital.

“I think we are doing something very good for the community and I enjoy it,” said Francefort.

“This is a great place to bring all your books, and know they will got o good homes and be read again and enjoyed by someone else,” said Trudeau.

“A lot of nice people come in. It’s been very rewarding,” said Francefort.

You can drop off books, or check out the shed Friday and Saturdays from 7-noon, rain or shine.
