Letter: The Remarkable Spirit of Greenwich

lettertotheeditor

To the Editor,

September 27 was Founders Day – a day to remember in the history of the Town of Greenwich! To celebrate the 375th Anniversary of the founding of Greenwich, thousands of people participated in a massive parade that moved from Greenwich Town Hall to the top of Greenwich Avenue and ended at the Havemeyer Field.

The parade began with two descendants of Greenwich founder Elizabeth Feake, who were followed by numerous descendants of our early families.   The spirit of Greenwich was over the top as everyone cheered elected officials from the town and State of Connecticut along with marchers from organizations, clubs, scouting troops, numerous fire engines, and many bands!

The bands continued to play on the field and a huge 100 x 50 foot American flag was ceremonially opened by the Greenwich Police Honor Guard and Explorer Scouts.  The descendants and all spectators later held the edges of the flag in a stirring birthday tribute to our spectacular town.

The Sentinel provided wonderful photo and audio coverage for the event, for which we are grateful.

Special thanks go to the Chairman of our 375th celebrations, Davidde Strackbein, and her committee.  It was a remarkable celebration!

Best,

Bea Crumbine
