It was an idea first brought before the Town in 2008, and finally, officials say, the brand new, world class, Greenwich High School Performing Arts Center is ready to raise the curtain for the first student concert.

“Welcome to the Greenwich High School Performing Arts Center. I think we can all agree this was all worth the wait,” said Headmaster Dr. Chris Winters.

Nine different numbers were performed in front of a packed house after the stage was officially opened with a ribbon cutting.

“The parents had a vision of a facility that would match the outstanding talent of our arts and theater groups,” said Chair Barbara O’Neill.

“The world comes to Greenwich, the world is educated in Greenwich, and now, the wonderful musicians and performers we’ve had in Greenwich for so many decades now have the venue that matches their capacities,” said Dr. William McKerise.

One of those musicians is Rob Mathes of the class of 1981. He is a world renowned composer, and used his talents to create a special piece that premiered during the opening concert called Can you Hear Me?

This was the concert’s closing piece and included the music of almost 350 students combined.

The next phase of MISA, or Musical Instruction Space and Auditorium will now begin. The old auditorium will be torn down and music classrooms will be built in its place.
