It’s a 21st century center to inspire future inventors, engineers and visionaries. Monday afternoon, the Innovation Space officially opened at Cos Cob School.

“There are motors and I think it’s pretty cool because you can make them draw,” said Alex, a 4th grader at Cos Cob School.
For Principal Gene Schmidt, the space is a tool to help his students succeed in and out of the classroom.
“We started doing all of this research and the more we researched, the more we knew that we needed kids to play to really develop their passions and then from there they would have a purpose and be able to use all of the instruction that we have in the building and all of the curriculum to really psych them up and give them other ways of doing something,” said Schmidt.
Dr. William McKersie, Superintendent of Greenwich Public Schools, said “What’s important is we want our students to be creative, to explore, to challenge themselves. That is what our digital learning initiative is all about and that is what this is. Letting kids create, explore and learn to make good decisions about how to learn and how to grow.”
And from a Lego wall complete with several thousand pieces, to a 3-D printer and robotics equipment, the students are ready to create.
“I’m excited to learn about more stuff,” said Bailee, a 4th grader at the school. “Learning how to make bigger robots and more complicated ones too.”
“It’s just so cool! There are so many different things you can build,” added classmate Aadi.
