October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and in Greenwich, the Breast Cancer Alliance is kicking things off with a ceremonial flag raising.

“The BCA succeeds because more than just raising critical funds to help irradiate breast cancer, we build meaningful relationships,” said Executive Director Yonni Wattenmaker.

The Breast Cancer Alliance is a non profit working to improve survival rates and quality of life for those impacted by breast cancer.

“This is a disease that I think knows no economic barriers, no racial or ethnic barriers. It effects us all,” said First Selectman Peter Tesei.

The BCA holds fundraisers throughout the year, but Executive Director Yonni Wattenmaker says more importantly through the BCA…

“You can also tour the labs of our researchers, and get in person updates on their work. You can sit with the breast surgeons whose fellowships we fund, and hear their inspiring stories of why they chose this field, and where they are going next to save more lives,” said Wattenmaker.

October 1 is the BCA’s annual Go For Pink fundraiser. On this day, over 60 stores in Greenwich donate up to 10 percent of their proceeds to the non-profit. Saks Fifth Avenue is participating by making the BCA the beneficiary of its Key to the Cure initiative. Saks designed a special shirt and offered BCA members and friends a free breakfast.

“Events like today lead to increased privately funded grants, more critical today than ever before,” said Wattenmaker.

Wattenmaker says these funds are necessary to fuel the BCA’s mission.

“Today we are fostering those relationships to build awareness about this disease so that one day we don’t have to stand here anymore because breast cancer is something of our past,” said Wattenmaker.

“More women are surviving longer and getting a better quality of life. We re making a difference,” said President Sharon Phillips.

The celebration continues with a Luncheon on October 22. For more information, visit www.breastcanceralliance.org.
