Greenwich Public Schools students learn social emotional skills through different activities during the school year. Today, the schools are celebrating Be Here: Log Off and Listen.

The students here at Julian Curtiss Elementary are learning to pay attention, listen, and communicate, and why it’s important to use these skills everyday.

“They really do listen in. They’ve been learning about whole body listening, which means listening with all parts of your body- many sure you’re leaning in to the speaker, your eyes, your ears. So it’s not just listening to the ambient noise,” said Julian Curtiss School Assistant Principal Brenda Brush.

Be Here is one of the five District Norms- the others are Be Safe, Be Honest, Care for Self and Others, and Let Go and Move On. Officials say practicing each of these skills throughout the year helps promote a safe school climate.

“You can say be here, and they think it means be here in a chair, but not to be present in the moment and really be paying attention and listening to either their teachers or peers,” said Brush.

There are events throughout the school year to help reinforce each of the district norms.
