The Greenwich Chapter of Room to Read is proud to welcome the actress Blake Lively; the Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning Producer Mira Chang; and Associate Director Audrey Morrissey, My Life My Choice, for a presentation and exclusive screening of “A Path Appears.”

“A Path Appears” is a documentary from the creative team that brought you the groundbreaking series Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. The film follows intrepid reporters Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn and actor/advocates Malin Akerman, Mia Farrow, Ronan Farrow, Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Ashley Judd, Blake Lively, Eva Longoria, and Alfre Woodard to Colombia, Haiti, Kenya, and throughout the United States as they uncover the harshest forms of gender-based oppression and human rights violations, as well as the effective solutions being implemented to combat them.

“It takes the citizens. It takes the parents. It takes the teachers. It takes the whole community to say there are children that are missing all the time. Even though its complex there is a solution and its just up to us to care,” said Blake Lively.

The evening begins with a screening of selections from the film followed by an illuminating discussion between Ms. Lively, Ms. Chang and Ms. Morrissey. The event will conclude with a dessert reception.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Performance Art Center at Greenwich Country Day School, 401 Old Church Road, Greenwich, CT. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are limited and can be purchased for $75 General Admission and $250 or $500 for Reserved Seating at https://www.roomtoread.org/apathappears. This event presents a unique opportunity for parents to expose their teenagers to a first-person account of the plight of girls around the world, and guests are encouraged to bring their children over the age of fifteen.

Proceeds will go directly to Room to Read, a global non-profit focused on literacy and girls’ education. Room to Read is currently working to rebuild Nepal following the devastating earthquakes this year. Room to Read has set-up a Nepal Education Fund to support communities to ensure that as many children as possible are able to return to a safe school environment that has the necessary learning materials to function. Over 32,000 classrooms in Nepal were destroyed and approximately one million children could not return to school or are in temporary “tent schools.”

Founded in 2008, the Greenwich Chapter of Room to Read has successfully hosted fundraisers for Room to Read including a benefit featuring Tina Brown and Sir John Major which raised close to half a million dollars. In addition to substantial fundraising efforts, the Greenwich Chapter has brought many noted authors to speak to the Greenwich community at Room to Read events including Patricia McCormick, Dr. Abraham Verghese and Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Egan.

Since 2000, Room to Read has opened over 1,900 schools and over 17,500 libraries, distributed over 15 million books including over 1150 self-published original local language titles, and supported over 31,500 girls to succeed in secondary school and beyond.
