JFS Celebrates Grandparents Day

Jewish Family Services of Greenwich (JFS) announced its Supermarketing for Seniors Celebrates Grandparents Day event, to be held on Sunday, Sept. 20. In partnership with neighborhood supermarkets, including A&P, Kings, Stop & Shop, and Balducci’s, as well as with The Senior Center of Greenwich, JFS representatives and volunteers will be stationed across the community to raise awareness and funding for its Supermarketing for Seniors program, a nondenominational free grocery shopping and case management service designed to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of housebound Greenwich citizen 60 years of age and older.

Supermarketing for Seniors has served the elderly neighbors of Greenwich since 1986, and currently the program provides shopping and support services to 180 seniors each year. Although there are no income requirements to participate in the program, 90% of the seniors are considered low income by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) guidelines, and many do not have other support systems in their lives to visit and monitor them on a regular basis. Over the course of a year, JFS hears the following quote dozens of times, “I don’t know what I would do without Supermarketing for Seniors; you are so important for my life.”

On Sunday, Sept. 20, JFS invites all community members to visit the Supermarketing for Seniors Celebrates Grandparents Day booths anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. At each booth, community members can show their support for the program. A donation of just $20 will support a week’s worth of shopping for a senior. All stations will have program information, free balloons and postcards that individuals can send to a senior in their own life to wish them a happy Grandparents Day. Finally, JFS will give away its first annual Shopper of the Year Award to the shopper who exemplifies the values of the program in front of The Senior Center at noon.

The locations of the booths will include:

• A&P in Central Greenwich, 160 W. Putnam Avenue

• A&P in Riverside, 1261 E. Putnam Avenue

• Balducci’s in Riverside, 1050 E. Putnam Avenue

• Kings in Old Greenwich, 26 Arcadia Road

• Stop & Shop in Central Greenwich, 161 W. Putnam Avenue

• The Senior Center, 299 Greenwich Avenue
