The community garden located at Armstrong Court has officially been designated as an Urban Oases by Audubon Connecticut.

“Here we are in this beautiful Urban Oases, a place we can all experience the benefits of nature and community working together to create access to healthy, sustainable food, and provide an essential stop over for migratory birds,” said President of Greenwich Community Gardens, Patty Sechi.

“One of the most exciting ways we are creating more bird friendly communities is through the Urban Oases Program that transforms green spaces in urban and suburban landscapes into quality habitat for migrating birds and other wildlife,” said Michelle Frankel of Greenwich Audubon.

This habitat at Armstrong Court joins other gardens throughout Fairfield and New Haven Counties to help both wildlife and people.

“Creating that habitat helps transform our neighborhoods into richer, beautiful, more healthful places for people to live, and enriched outdoor environments for young people to learn and explore,” said Frankel.

And that’s exactly what the students at Family Centers Head Start Preschool do every week. They learn about wildlife and vegetation hands on in the garden.

“When we start a garden, we start it with tiny seeds, and we care for them, we nourish them, and we watch them grow. Our youngest gardeners are just like those seeds,” said Sechi.

Audubon official say the Armstrong Court garden is special because it’s the first Urban Oases to have a bilingual, natural history interpretive sign. You can learn more by going to www.greenwichcommunitygardens.org.
