Greenwich High Girls Swim Team Beats Trumbull in Opener

The Greenwich High School girls swimming and diving team took care of Trumbull High School in the opening meet of the season for both schools Wednesday afternoon.

For Greenwich, they were able to take the top two in each of the first seven events of the day and swept the podium in three events.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Lilly Clisham took top honors, touching the wall with a time of 2:20.25 and beat out teammate Sarah Bellamy, who finished second with a time of 2:03.24. In the 200-yard individual medley, Brooke Collins dominated the competition and finished with a top time of 2:16.05. Brittany Baker was second and just over six seconds behind Collins.

The most exciting event of the afternoon was in the 50-yard freestyle, as all three top Greenwich swimmers were poised to claim victory. In the end it was Ainsleigh Winget that won, posting a time of 25.89 seconds. A mere inches away was Sophia Jahan, who touched the wall second and grabbed a time of 25.90. Taylor Schinto placed third with a time of 26.15.

Jahan also competed in the 100-yard freestyle and took home silver and a time of 56.57. Winning the event was Greenwich’s Samantha Scott, who finished with a time of 53.71. Lily Clisham was third, touching the wall with a time of 57.09.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Greenwich’s Kelly Montesi won the event with a time of 1:00.60. Not to be outdone was Winget, who was second and grabbed a time of 1:04.27.

Greenwich also took first and second in the longest event of the day, the 500-yard freestyle. Emily Warner calmly won the event, ending the day with a time of 5:27.49. Bellamy also competed in the event and finished second with a time of 5:33.19.

In the first two relay events, the Lady Cardinals had some stellar performances. To start the event, Greenwich’s Kelly Montesi, Brooke Collins, Ainsleigh Winget and Emily Warner competed in the 200-yard medley relay and finished tops with a time of 1:53.08.

Winget, along with Riley Ennis, Sophia Jahan and Louisa Bjerke, battled in the 200-yard freestyle relay and finished golden with a time of 1:44.68.

The divers for Greenwich were certainly on its game against the Eagles. Kate Russack took home first with 232.8 points, while Emily Murphy ended the day with the silver and 211.45 point. Rounding out the top three finishers was Catie McCarthy, who finished with 175.15 points.

With the victory, Greenwich High improves to 1-0 on the season.
