Update 9/15: The 80-year-old vehicle operator was identified as Patrick Conroy of Wall, NJ. Mr. Conroy’s son dove into the water, according to Greenwich Police, and attempted to rescue his father and was still in the water upon arrival of the police and fire personnel. Preliminary investigation has revealed that Mr. Conroy along with members of his close family had taken two vehicles to the Cos Cob Marina to launch the family boat onto the Long Island Sound.

According to Greenwich Police, an elderly man was killed when he drove his vehicle off the boat ramp of Cos Cob Harbor early Monday afternoon on what was supposed to be a family day on the water.

The man in his 80’s, according to Lt. Kraig Gray, was driving a Chrysler minivan when the car began to slowly descend into the water on the boat ramp.

“Certainly, some sort of maneuver took place on the ramp that resulted in the vehicle going over the edge and then going into the water,” Gray said. “The elderly gentleman in there was underwater for some time and he was pronounced deceased.”

The man, who was accompanied by his family, are not from Greenwich.

Members of the Sound Beach Scuba Team and Greenwich Fire Department removed the man from the car and Greenwich Emergency Medical Services provided medical attention before he was transported to Greenwich Hospital and pronounced dead.

According to Lt. Gray, the case is currently being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Scene as well as the marine division of GPD to figure out all circumstances of the scene.
