Greenwich said goodbye to summer during Closing Day at the Greenwich Polo Club Sunday afternoon.
“There is no where in the United States, in the summer that you are going to see 20-goal polo,” said Leighton Jordan, Managing Director of the Greenwich Polo Club. “We have the best polo in the summer months that you are going to get. Anyone who comes sees the best polo and the best polo players. Today being Closing Day it is kind of sad but it has been exhausting but great!”
Mariana Castro, Director of Marketing for the Greenwich Polo Club says Closing Day highlights the best of the summer season.
“People come and picnic on the lawn, sit on the grand stands if they really want to a match and follow a game play-by-play or come with their kids and their dogs and enjoy the grounds and they get to see the most amazing polo in the summer.”
The day wasn’t just about polo. It was also about conservation education.
” We are very excited to be chosen as the charity of choice for the East Coast Open which concluded last weekend and for Closing Day,”said Marcella Leone. “It’s a really exciting day!”
Marcella Leone, Founder & Director of the LEO Zoological Conservation Center was on hand giving presentations about the African cheetah & conservation practices.
“We have 47 species of animal at the conservation center and if we can have a few of these animal ambassadors that we can bring close to people, we really can impact them. We can talk about some of the conservation things and problems that are facing us,” said Leone. “In this community and in Fairfield County, people really do want to help. People are concerned and they get that the balance of nature is off and we have to do something different than what we are doing. It is great to be able to connect with people here and a lot of folks are jumping on board to help us.”
After a successful season, Leighton Jordan hopes the community comes back next season.
“Wow! I want come back and tell someone about it. That’s what I want people to do,” said Jordan. “I want them to see the best polo because as long as we are here playing, you aren’t going to go anywhere else in the country to see this kind of polo. That for me is a big thrill to bring this to anybody who can come to the Greenwich Polo Club.”
