Off the shores of Greenwich, members of the Police Department’s Marine Division Dive Team are practicing their skills.

“The Marine Division of Greenwich consists of seven officers. Out of that, five of those are dive team members,” said Lt. John Brown of the Marine Division.

In today’s training, a mannequin was placed in the water so the officers could locate and recover it.

“This is ongoing training. We are always learning and training,” said Brown.

The Marine Section was able to get funding for six brand new sets of dive gear for the officers through the federal government’s Port Security Grant Program.

“This is their first day utilizing the new equipment in open water,” said Brown.

This equipment can be used for search and rescue, weapon and evidence recovery, and even Homeland Security.

“We are taking it to a higher level where we are going to be doing actual HAZMAT diving, inspecting hulls, bridges, or pilings,” said Brown.

Officials say they will be doing more training with dive teams from all over Fairfield County in October.
